I seem to be having CV joint probs - noise when turning, generally floaty
feel to steering - etc anybody got any thoughts on whether to take the
problem to my local Honda dealership or use a local repair shop?

you don't fell cv joint problems in the steering. first thing i would
check is tire pressure.

Change your rear differential fluid if it's over 50,000 km, especially
if noise is louder on left-hand turns at low speed. Use only Honda Dual
Pump Fluid. You only need one litre, and it's easy on a '97, with a
broom handle, 4 feet of plastic tubing, and a small funnel, look over
the rear left tire and see the drain and fill plugs. You'll figure it out.

just got word back from mechanic - need to change differential fluid $29.00
and cv joints split have to replace axles $621.00. Oh woe is me! Why
wouldn't this have been noticed earlier at oil chang or checkup time? Any
comments?

I think CV joint failure happens often enough that I personally am prepared for
it anytime a car has more than say, 70k miles on it. I maintain my "emergency
cash stash" planning for that roughly $1000 worst case car repair.

I believe the key is to inspect the CV boots often. If the boots don't fail, a
joint failure is unlikely. But they do happen. I'm not so sure you should "beat
yourself up," so to speak, over it perhaps being preventable.

I think I've only had CV boot failures in my 20+ years of car (all Japanese)
owning.

None so far on my current car.

If you're at 250,000 miles, it's cheap maintenance. I'd phone around for
a cheaper quote before booking it in. (I'd also look under there to see
what I'm paying for too)
